Google Confirms an Update on Re-writing Web Page Titles

One week after Google made a change to the titles it generates on search results, they confirmed that it did make those changes.

Although we’re not quite sure what took them soo long to confirm it. But it’s out now.

In a tweet from Google Search Central, they said:

“Last week, we introduced a new system of generating titles for web pages. Here’s the rundown on how it works:”

Google is now publicly informing us “How They Generate Titles,”. This is quite amazing; however, we may need to work on a few things; mostly on On-Page content.

Danny Sullivan posted on Google Search Central stating:

“Last week, we introduced a new system of generating titles for web pages. Before this, titles might change based on the query issued. This generally will no longer happen with our new system. This is because we think our new system is producing titles that work better for documents overall, to describe what they are about, regardless of the particular query”.

Since it was noticed in live search engine results last week, Google’s new system for generating web page titles has been extensively documented.

Here’s the summary of what Google said in its extensive document of how they generate web page titles:

  1. Earlier, the Meta Titles of a page would change based on the keyword entered by the user. Well, don’t hold your breath for it to happen henceforth.
  2. Google’s new algorithm will now fetch and build titles from the content it considers relevant to the user. Basically, they are making use of text that humans can visually see when they arrive at a web page like h1.

Why does Google search for something in the content, when page titles are already provided?

Because title tags do not always accurately describe the page. It can be one of three things:

  1. Title too long
  2. Keyword Stuffed
  3. Boilerplate

What is Google’s recommendation for creating title tags?

Google says: Focus on creating great HTML title tags. Of all the ways we generate titles, content from HTML title tags is still by far the most likely used, more than 80% of the time.

To sum up;

Make sure to write a simple Title that explains the purpose of your webpage with relevant keywords in it. Eg; For a BFSI client that provides an online current account service in India, you will write “Open Current Account Online in India with (Business Name)” and the content on the page too should talk about online current account service, its features, benefits and nothing else.
