Google Introduces Favicons, Sitename, and Sponsored Labels on Desktop

Favicons, site names, and sponsored labels are now fully live on Google’s desktop search globally, after testing out the same since November 2022. The search giant said that site names and upgrade favicons can be controlled by using the structured data documentation available on Google Search Central.

  • The search giant rolls out new favicons, site names and sponsored labels on desktop search
  • Site names and favicons can be controlled using structured data
  • In October 2022, larger favicons with site names were introduced in mobile search

Here’s what the documentation says, in brief:

For Site names

Google said that it automatically determines site names based on several sources from a site’s homepage and that it cannot manually change site names for individual sites. Yet, there’s a way for you to control the site name: by using structured data on your homepage and clearly stating what site name your site should have.

For Favicons

As per the documentation on favicons, Google recommends that the icon must be a multiple of 48px square, the favicon URL should be stable (not dynamic), and should ensure that it visually represents your website’s brand to aid users in immediately recognizing it as they scroll through search results.

For Sponsored Ad

The ad label is now replaced by the ‘Sponsored’ label in desktop search results. Earlier, the sponsored label was introduced for mobile search results in October 2022.
